Hello and welcome to my website and my very first blog.

A little about me

I’m Julie and the owner of ‘Stay Active with Julie’. I am 58 and I live in Bournemouth with my husband Phil. We have been married for 34 years. Our children are both grown up, our daughter works in London and our son has just finished a masters in palaeontology (yes….. just like Ross from ‘Friends’)

As a group exercise teacher, it’s important to me that my classes are inclusive to everyone. Age, ability, shape, or size does not matter. Every exercise can be adapted and made easier or harder! No dance experience is needed, so if you’re new to exercise or returning to exercise there will be a class in my timetable that will suit you.

My first experience of teaching physical activity

For 8 years I have been teaching adult fitness classes and have loved every minute of it. However, my first experience of teaching physical activity goes way back to when my children were very small, and I took over our local Tumble Tots franchise.  Working with children was always great fun! The ages ranged from just 6 months up to 7 years old. Classes were structured to help children to develop their physical skills of agility, balance, co ordination and confidence. Unfortunately, due to a prolapse disc I had to think about my health and my future and rolling around with very small children was not the best thing for my back. It was time to make a change in my career and move away from teaching children to teaching adults.

Teaching fitness to adults

In 2004 I started attending FLexercise classes, back then it was called ‘The Fitness League’.  After I hurt my back, I found the exercises we did really helped with my prolapsed disc. The movements were safe and gentle and there was a strong focus on posture.

I loved it so much that in 2013 I decided to become a Level 3 teacher. Later, in 2016, I became a Zumba Fitness Instructor, this included Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold Toning. In 2021 I qualified as a ‘This Girl Can’ Fitness Instructor. I have gained a Level 3 Award in Education and Training which means I can deliver continuing professional development (CPD) training to other fitness instructors. I also have accredited Level 3 qualifications in Exercise Referral and Nutrition for Physical Activity.
